Work Out World Hopes To Carve Niche In Competitive Tewksbury Fitness Market

Hugo Salano, manager of Work Out World in Tewksbury.

Hugo Solano knows it isn't easy for a new gym to break into a thriving fitness market, But he also knows that if you offer the right product, it can be done.
Two years ago, Solano helped to open a new Work Out World (WOW) in Worcester, That location became so successful, his bosses at Blast Fitness (parent company for Work Out World) assigned him to repeat the success in Tewksbury, this time as gym manager.
The new location, at 553 Main St., adjacent to Ocean State Job Lot in the former Purity Supreme plaza, opened its doors on April 8.
Solano says what has made WOW successful at its other locations is a commitment to making gym membership simple and affordable for everyone.
"We offer first-class amenities at affordable rates," said Solano. "Our goal is to provide each and every member with the tools and resources they need to achieve their optimal fitness goals, in a clean, friendly, comfortable environment."
To that end, Solano is offering a grand opening special through June 16 -- Just $1 to sign up and $10 a month for a basic membership. A Platinum Membership is also available at $20 a month. The Platinum membership comes with such amenities as free child care, tanning, and free guest passes included.
"The free child care is great for moms who may feel like they don't have the time to workout or don't have the money for a babysitter," said Solano. "They can come in, bring their child to the daycare area and go work out."
WOW has 11 locations in Massachusetts but Tewksbury and Lawrence are the only two in the Merrimack Valley. The Tewksbury gym employs 10 people right now but Solano is looking to grow as membership grows.
The Tewksbury WOW facility is bigger than it looks like from the outside, taking up 22,000 square feet. The main gym area has nearly 200 pieces of equipment, including 50 treadmills and dozens of other cardio machines and just as many weight machines.
But in addition to the daycare area, there is also a "women-only" workout room and another large room for group classes.
Solano said personal training sessions are available and both basic and Platinum membership come with a free one-hour personal training session.
