UPDATED: Severe Thunderstorm Rips Through Merrimack Valley

A major thunderstorm, bring heavy rains, lightning and high winds rolled across the Merrimack Valley Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 5 p.m. A flash flood warning is in effect until 6: 30 p.m. and a flash flood watch is in effect until 2 p.m. Wednesday. 
The NWS said additional storms are expected to hit the region through the early evening but that the strong winds remain the top concern.
As of 5:02 p.m., National Grid was reporting four power outages in Tewksbury. Three were isolated, impacting around 30 customers. But the fourth is impacting more than 3,600 customers in an area that stretches from the Wamesit area of Tewksbury into the Belvedere neighborhood of Lowell.
UPDATE: As of 6 p.m., more than 4,000 residents remained without power. Most in the Wamesit and Whipple Road areas, near the Lowell line. There are several isolated outages in the Wamesit and North Tewksbury areas.
