A 59-year-old Billerica man is facing multiple charges in connection with an alleged three-town bank robbery spree.
Daniel Diblasi is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court Friday in connection with bank robberies Thursday morning in Billerica and Tewksbury and an attempted robbery of a third bank in Wilmington. Specific charges have not yet been released.
According to information obtained from police reports, Diblasi's mini-crime wave began when he allegedly robbed the Lowell Five Bank, 700 Boston Road in Billerica at around 10:30 a.m. At the time, a BOLO went out for an older male driving a red Ford Explorer.
Less than an hour later, Tewksbury Police responded to a call for a bank robbery at the Lowell Five Bank branch at 1775 Main St. In both cases, the suspect was said to have fled the scene with an unspecified amount of cash.
At this point, residents of South Tewksbury and Wilmington reported seeing police helicopters circling the area.
At around noon, according to a statement released by Wilmington Police, DiBlasi was spotted by a WPD officer pulling into the drive through of Eastern Bank, 370 Main St. According to the statement, DiBlasi was attempting to rob that bank as well.
What DiBlasi was not aware of was the Wilmington Police cruiser pulling in right behind him. A short time later, DiBlasi was placed under arrest without incident. According to the WPD statement, evidence found in his vehicle connected DiBlasi with the earlier robberies.
