Long Pond in Tewksbury is a ten-acre surface pond off of Whipple Road. The pond played host to Tewksbury kids participating in the Adventure Kids kayak camp this week- a partnership between Still River Outfitters of Bolton and the Town of Tewksbury. Tewksbury worked with Still River as part of an ongoing effort to encourage use of Tewksbury’s natural resources. In addition to Long Pond, the town has access points to the Shawsheen River, Bay Circuit Trail hiking paths, and extensive open space parcels available for residents to explore.
Along with safe paddling instruction, the kids learned how to perform water rescues, extensive team-based activities, and several trust-building exercises. Paddlers explored inlets on Long Pond, found turtles, observed swans, and even foraged blueberries along the shoreline. Steve Sadwick, Community Development Director for the Town of Tewksbury and sponsor of the program noted “The utilization of the Town’s natural resources for passive recreational activities has significant benefits for all. The kayak experience on Long Pond will provide life- long memories for these kids. We encourage more residents to get out and enjoy the Town’s great natural resources.”
Stay tuned for future opportunities to participate in organized activities in the town including some fall paddling and winter snowshoeing. Visit the town website at www.tewksbury-ma.gov and click on the left side of the page to find an alert option to receive Town News.
