The Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA Hockey Team opened their 2014-2015 season with a dominating 4-0 win over the defending Massachusetts State Champion Parkway Hawks. The Jr. Redmen knew they would have to be at their best to compete with the Hawks but were confident that pre-season scrimmages against the Jr. Riverhawks, the Shamrocks, and the Vipers had them ready to go.
The Jr. Redmen came out flying to open the game at O’Brien Rink in Woburn, getting immediate pressure and 2 great scoring chances on the first shift of the game from the line of Ryan Flynn, Will Rosato, and Jason Cooke. Parkway got their legs moving and started to create some offensive zone pressure but great defensive efforts from James Kierce and Andrew Grieco kept pucks away from the Jr. Redmen net. The Jr. Redmen nearly took a 1-0 lead when the line of Matthew Cooke, Billy Doherty, and Conor Cremin worked the offensive zone cycle to perfection resulting in back-to-back shots that hit posts. The Jr. Redmen finally connected, scoring with 32 seconds left in the opening period when Andrew Della Piana found the back of the net, assists to Brady Chapman and Jack Griffin.
The Hawks came out strong to open the 2nd period but outstanding goaltending from Ben O’Keefe kept the 1-0 lead for the Jr. Redmen. The boys increased their lead to 2-0 just 1:37 into the 2nd period when Jason Cooke carried the puck around 2 defenders at center ice and broke in alone, burying a hard wrist shot into the back of the net, assist to Andrew Grieco. The Hawks kept attacking looking to cut the Jr. Redmen lead in half but Jonny Norwood and Jack Griffin made back-to-back great defensive plays to keep the 2 goal lead. The Jr. Redmen went on a powerplay with just over 2 minutes to play in the period and the PP unit worked the puck around the offensive zone perfectly resulting in a bomb from the right point from Brady Chapman into the top corner of the net, assists to Jason Cooke and Andrew Della Piana.
The Jr. Redmen opened the 3rd period with a 3-0 lead knowing that the Hawks would be attacking. The defensive unit of James Kierce, Andrew Grieco, Jonny Norwood, and Jack Griffin did a great job of keeping pucks away from the Jr. Redmen net and when shots did get through, Ben O’Keefe was there to make a handful of highlight reel saves. The Jr. Redmen increased their lead to 4-0 with 5:45 left in the game when Andrew Della Piana scored his 2nd goal of the game, assists to Brady Chapman and Daniel Kierce. The line of Billy Doherty, Conor Cremin, and Matthew Cooke nearly gave the Jr. Redmen a 5-0 lead on the ensuing faceoff but the Hawks’ goalie made 3 consecutive saves. The Jr. Redmen closed out the final 4 minutes of the game controlling play and securing the shutout win for O’Keefe.
