Playing Cornhole is simple. Playing it well can be another story.
This weekend, we will find out who plays it the best.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, as part of the Tewksbury Fall Harvest Fair, a Cornhole Tournament will take place as a fundraiser for the Tewksbury Memorial High School Cheerleaders Scholarship Fund.
The tournament is for teams of two and will be divided into age groups -- A Teen Division for players 13 years old through high school seniors and an Adult Division for those post-high school.
"If there are players 11 or 12 years old and their parents think they are good enough that they can compete in a tournament like this, we would let them play as well," said John Spinelli, organizer of the tournament.
The entry fee is $40 per adult team and $20 per teen.
There will be cash prizes based on the total number of entries but the winners will also get their names engraved on the shiny new Cornhole Championship Trophy.
"We're going to set up pools of four teams each. So each team will get to play a minimum of three games," said Spinelli. The winner of each pool will then move on to the elimination round."
For those unfamiliar with Cornhole (and I confess that until recently I was one of those people), the game is fairly simple. Players attempt to toss small bags filled with hardened corn kernels through a small hole on a pitched board some 27 feet away. Each player gets four bags. Getting it through the board is worth three points and landing it on the board is worth one point. The team with the best score in a round is awarded the difference between their points their opponents. For example, if Team A scores four and Team B scores 1, then Team A would be awarded three points.
The first team to reach 21 points at the completion of a round is the winner.
Tournament registration will take place from 11 a.m. to noon. Pools and brackets will then be constructed and actual competition will begin around 1 p.m.
Tournament organizers have 20 Cornhole sets, which will allow play to continue at a brisk pace throughout the afternoon.
The complete tournament format and rules are attached to this article as a PDF file.
