A bizarre accident on Route 495 Tuesday night caused damage to at least a dozen cars and injured a young child.

According to State Police, the accident happened around 8 p.m. when a tire fell off a vehicle traveling at full speed in the northbound lane of Route 495 in Tewksbury, between the Route 38 and Route 133 exits. The tire bounced over the median and into the southbound lane and directly into oncoming traffic.

The tire struck several vehicles, causing varying degrees of damage. Other vehicles were damaged in an effort to avoid the tire. According to State Police, there was one collision between two vehicles.

Amazingly, there was just one person hurt. A two-year-old child suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by Tewksbury ambulance to Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus for treatment.
