Redmen Pull Upset, Advance in State Division 2 Field Hockey Tournament

Oct 30, 2014 05:58PM ● Published by Bill Gilman

The Tewksbury High field hockey team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 2 North Tournament will a shocking 2-1 overtime win at Marblehead on Wednesday.

At. No. 13, Tewksbury (9-10-0) was the lowest seeded team in the tournament. Marblehead (13-5-2) came in at No. 4.

The Redmen trailed late in the game when Amanda Brown scored off a penalty corner with under four minutes left in regulation.

Both teams had scoring chances in the overtime period but Tewksbury keeper Cora Gagnon (nine saves) came up with a huge stop to keep Marblehead at bay.

That set the stage for heroics by junior Emily Donohue, who snuck free on a breakaway, beat the Marblehead keeper cleanly and sent Tewksbury into the quarterfinals.

The Redmen will be on the road again Friday to take on No. 5 Triton (13-4-2) at 2:30 p.m. with a berth in the North Sectional semifinals on the line.
