The Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA team continued their strong play as they swept weekend action against Marblehead and Hyde Park, running their regular season league record to 15-1-1.
On Saturday November 22nd the Jr. Redmen traveled to the Burlington Ice Palace for a game against a talented and speedy Marblehead team. The Jr. Redmen controlled play for the majority of the 1st period, getting some early scoring chances from Conor Cremin, James Kierce, and Billy Doherty. Marblehead’s team speed was countered with some great defensive efforts from Andrew Grieco and Jonny Norwood, who used their own speed to break up a handful of scoring chances. The Jr. Redmen took a 1-0 lead late in the 1st period when Jason Cooke fired a hard wrister from the high slot that beat the Marblehead goalie glove side. Marblehead came out strong in the 2nd period and had 3 to 4 great scoring chances early on but Jr. Redmen goalie Ben O’Keefe made a series of saves that had the crowd chanting his name.
The Jr. Redmen created some offense of their own but quality shots from Andrew Della Piana and Will Rosato were turned away. The Jr. Redmen took a 2-0 lead late in the 2nd period when Matthew Cooke stole the puck from a Marblehead defender and beat the goalie short-side with a quick backhander. Once again Marblehead opened quickly in the 3rd period as they put pressure on the Jr. Redmen but Daniel Kierce and Jack Griffin both played great defense to keep pucks away from the net. The Jr. Redmen took a 3-0 lead midway through the final period when Ryan Flynn used his speed to cut in along the right wing faceoff circle and he slid a nifty backhander through the 5-hole. The Jr. Redmen closed out the scoring with just over 3 minutes to play in the game when Brady Chapman tipped in a shot from the high slot, assists to Daniel Kierce and Jason Cooke. Ben O’Keefe made some great saves in the final 2 minutes of the game to secure the 4-0 shutout win for the Jr. Redmen.
The Jr. Redmen were right back at the rink early Sunday morning for a battle with Hyde Park at the LoConte Rink in Medford. The Jr. Redmen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Conor Cremin used his blazing speed to get to the Hyde Park net and he fired a wrister off the post and in, assists on the goal to Billy Doherty and Daniel Kierce. Hyde Park put some pressure on the Jr. Redmen late in the 1st period but Ben O’Keefe was there to make back-to-back saves to keep the score 1-0 through the 1st period.
Hyde Park opened the 2nd period looking to tie the game but great defensive efforts from Jonny Norwood and Andrew Grieco kept the lead for the Jr. Redmen. The Jr. Redmen increased their lead to 2-0 when Brady Chapman scored on a breakaway on a nice deke move, assists on the goal to Jason Cooke and James Kierce. Matthew Cooke gave the Jr. Redmen a 3-0 lead just 1:45 later as he fired a beautiful wrist shot high over the goalie’s blocker from the right faceoff circle, assists to Andrew Della Piana and Will Rosato. The tough and rough defensive tandem of Daniel Kierce and Jack Griffin made sure that Hyde Park was not able to get any pucks near the Jr. Redmen net as the 2nd period ended.
The Jr. Redmen scored early in the 3rd period to take a 4-0 lead when the line of Billy Doherty, Conor Cremin, and Ryan Flynn worked the perfect tic-tac-toe cycle down low in the Hyde Park zone resulting in Doherty burying a one-time from the low slot, assists to Cremin and Flynn. The Jr. Redmen controlled play for the final 5 minutes of the game and left the rink with a dominating 4-0 win and a 2nd straight shutout for their goalie Ben O’Keefe.
