The Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA Hockey Team had a busy Saturday before Christmas as they skated to 2 convincing wins over the Lynnfield-Saugus Stars and the East Coast Wizards.
The Jr. Redmen skated against the Lynnfield-Saugus Stars on Saturday morning December 20th before the hometown crowd at Breakaway Ice Center. The Stars were gunning for the locals as the Jr. Redmen were recently moved to the Elite Division of the Valley Hockey League.
The Stars controlled play for the first 4 minutes of the game but thanks to outstanding goaltending from Ben O’Keefe and stalwart defensive work from Andrew Grieco, Daniel Kierce, Jack Griffin, and Jonny Norwood, the Stars were kept off the scoreboard. The Jr. Redmen got their legs moving and nearly took a 1-0 lead with just over 5 minutes to play in the 1st period when Conor Cremin made a great centering pass to Billy Doherty in the low slot but Doherty’s one-timer rang off the crossbar.
The Jr. Redmen dominated the 2nd period, peppering the Stars’ goalie with a number of high-quality shots. Andrew Della Piana gave the Jr. Redmen a 1-0 lead with just over 7 minutes to play in the 2nd period, assists on the goal going to Brady Chapman and James Kierce. The Jr. Redmen went on the powerplay with just over 3 minutes to play in the middle period and had a series of great chances to take a 2-0 lead but shots from Ryan Flynn, Will Rosato, and Jason Cooke were all saved by the Stars’ netminder.
The Jr. Redmen came out flying in the 3rd period and quickly increased their lead to 2-0 when Jason Cooke fired a wicked snap shot into the back of the net, a shot that the Stars’ goalie never saw until the referee picked it up out of the net. The Stars battled right back and cut the Jr. Redmen lead in half with just over 7 minutes to play in the game. The momentum quickly shifted back to the Jr. Redmen as Matthew Cooke scored just 37 seconds later to give the Jr. Redmen a 3-1 lead, assists to Billy Doherty and Conor Cremin.
The Jr. Redmen controlled play for the final 5 minutes of the game and left the rink with a well-deserved 3-1 win.
Just a couple of hours after their win over Lynnfield-Saugus, the Jr. Redmen hit the road for a battle against the East Coast Wizards at The Edge Sports Center in Bedford. The Jr. Redmen came out flying and scored 4 goals in the first 7 minutes of the game.
Matthew Cooke got things started as he fired a bar-down wrister into the back of the net, assist to Brady Chapman. Just 53 seconds later, Conor Cremin fired a shot from the right faceoff circle into the back of the net to give the Jr. Redmen a 2-0 lead. Andrew Della Piana gave the locals a 3-0 lead when he fired home a rebound, assists to Daniel Kierce and Jack Griffin. The 4-goal outburst ended when Jason Cooke tipped in a shot from the point, assists to Jonny Norwood and Matthew Cooke. The Wizards ended the 1st period by scoring 2 goals in the final minute to cut the Jr. Redmen lead to 4-2.
The Jr. Redmen scored just 35 seconds into the 2nd period to take a 5-2 lead when William Rosato buried a one-timer from the slot, assists to Andrew Grieco and Jason Cooke. The Wizards opened the 3rd period by using their speed to create offensive zone pressure but Jr. Redmen goalie Ben O’Keefe made a series of saves to maintain the 5-2 lead.
Brady Chapman scored late in the game to increase the Jr. Redmen lead, assists to Billy Doherty and James Kierce. The Jr. Redmen left the rink with another convincing win and headed to their annual Christmas Party for a great night of fun!!
