The Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA Hockey Team continued their strong play over the weekend, with back-to-back shutouts over the Dorchester Elite Squirts and the Wilmington Wildcats.
On Saturday January 17th the Jr. Redmen travelled to Devine Rink in Dorchester for a morning battle against a big and physical Dorchester Squirt team. Dorchester held the early advantage as they had two great scoring chances in the 1st minute of the game but Jr. Redmen goaltender Ben O’Keefe made both saves. Dorchester continued to pressure the Jr. Redmen zone but solid defensive efforts from Daniel Kierce and Jack Griffin kept pucks away from the Jr. Redmen net. The locals finally got their skating legs and took a 1-0 lead on a powerplay goal with 6:04 left in the 1st period when Jason Cooke fired a bomb from the left point over the goalie’s glove and into the back of the net, assists on the PP goal going to Conor Cremin and Brady Chapman. The Jr. Redmen increased their lead to 2-0 with 2:48 left in the opening period when Matthew Cooke “sniped” a wrister from the high slot that the Dorchester goalie never saw, assists on the goal going to Andrew Della Piana and William Rosato.
Dorchester opened the 2nd period looking to get back into the game but they were unable to penetrate the rock-solid Jr. Redmen defense of James Kierce and Jason Cooke. The Jr. Redmen had a great chance to increase their lead when they went on the powerplay with just over 5 minutes to play in the 2nd period. Ryan Flynn used his speed to win a race for the puck in behind the Dorchester net and he sent a great pass to Billy Doherty on the right half-wall. Doherty skated in towards the Dorchester goal and sent a beautiful cross-crease pass to Center Jonny Norwood who fired a one-timer that rang off the crossbar. With time winding down in the 2nd period the Jr. Redmen increased their lead to 3-0 when Jason Cooke went end-to-end and finished with a pretty wrister just inside the left post, assists on the goal going to cousins, goalie Ben O’Keefe and right wing Billy Doherty.
The Jr. Redmen had back-to-back chances early in the 3rd period to increase their lead when Andrew Grieco made a great deke move around a Dorchester defenseman and fired a hard wrister that that goalie kicked out. Grieco attacked the net for the rebound and fired a backhander that the goalie was able to grab with his catching glove. Dorchester had some mid-period chances to get on the scoreboard but outstanding goaltending from Ben O’Keefe thwarted any chances. The Jr. Redmen used their strong team defense and aggressive forechecking to control the final 4 minutes of the game and secured the 3-0 shutout win.
The Jr. Redmen were back at the rink on Sunday January 18th for their 1st District 10 Playdown Game against the Wilmington Wildcats at Allied Veterans Skating Arena in Everett. The Jr. Redmen came out flying and nearly scored on their 1st two shifts but the Wilminton goalie made back-to-back highlight reel saves off of shots from Conor Cremin and Andrew Della Piana to keep the game scoreless. The Jr. Redmen were finally able to get on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead with 5:04 left in the 1st period when Conor Cremin scored a pretty breakaway goal, assist to Andrew Grieco. The Jr. Redmen increased their lead to 2-0 just 1:49 later when Jason Cooke fired a hard wrist shot from the left point into the top corner of the net, assist on the goal to Andrew Della Piana. Wilmington used their speed to create some offensive zone pressure but outstanding defensive efforts from Jack Griffin and Daniel Kierce kept the 2-0 lead for the Jr. Redmen after the 1st period.
The Wildcats had some early 2nd period shots on net but Jr. Redmen netminder Ben O’Keefe made a series of saves that had the Wilmington fans cheering for him. The Jr. Redmen nearly took a 3-0 lead with just over 8 minutes to play in the 2nd period when Ryan Flynn and Billy Doherty had a perfect give-and-go out of the left corner resulting in a Doherty snap shot that rang off the far post. The Jr. Redmen’s speed led to a breakaway for Brady Chapman with 6:20 left in the 2nd period. Chapman skated in alone and fired a nifty wrist shot over the goalie’s blocker for the 3-0 lead, assist going to Andrew Grieco. The Jr. Redmen kept attacking and Conor Cremin scored his 2nd goal of the game to make the score 4-0, assists on the goal going to Andrew Grieco (his 3rd of the day for the Playmaker) and Brady Chapman. The Wildcats had an early push in the final period to get back into the game but they were unable to get close to the Jr. Redmen net thanks to solid defense from James Kierce and Jason Cooke. The Jr. Redmen kept attacking and took a 5-0 lead with 9:16 left in the game when Jonny Norwood fired a rebound into the top corner, assist going to Brady Chapman. The Jr. Redmen went on the powerplay with just over 6 minutes to play in the game and nearly scored but shots from William Rosato and Matthew Cooke were snagged by the Wildcat goalie. Brady Chapman scored his 2nd goal of the game with 3:12 left in the final period to give the Jr. Redmen a 6-0 lead, assist on the goal going to Conor Cremin.
