It’s been 18 months since Aubuchon Hardware acquired Tewksbury Hardware. Next month, the two will officially merge into one location.
Aubuchon officials confirmed last week that the company plans to open a new location adjacent to the Brave Troops Buffet in the former Rite Aid Plaza.
According to Kenneth Moore, Aubuchon’s vice-president of merchandising, the new location will be opened by March 15.
With the opening of the new location, Aubuchon will close both Tewksbury Hardware, 853 Main St. and Aubuchon’s South Tewksbury location at 2261 Main St.
Tewksbury Paint and Hardware, which Aubuchon acquired in September 2013, will close Feb. 28, when its current lease runs out, said Moore. The South Tewksbury location will stay open a little while longer to allow for a smooth transition.
Aubuchon’s new location is slightly more that 12,000 square feet, or roughly twice as big as the current South Tewksbury location. The plaza is owned by a real estate trust and is leased, in full, by the Stop & Shop corporation. Aubuchon will actually be subletting the space from Stop & Shop.
The Rite Aid Plaza location was not Aubuchon’s first choice as a new home. The company had been in negotiations with Demoulas to lease for the former Home Goods space in Oakdale Mall. However, the nearly 15,000 square foot space was too big for Aubuchon’s needs and Demoulas had no desire to subdivide the space.
Moore said the company is pleased with the way things worked out.
“This is definitely a better location for us,” said Moore. “It fits our needs. And the location itself is excellent.”
There has been no official decision what will be done with the South Tewksbury building following the merger.
