State Police are investigating an incident in Tewksbury Tuesday morning that left two people with knife wounds and the alleged assailant dead at the hands of Tewksbury Police.
According to District Attorney Marian Ryan, just after 9 a.m., 30-year-old Doug Sparks of Medford assaulted a man and a woman with a knife in the parking lot of the Salter School for business on Woburn Street.
Responding to 911 calls, Tewksbury Police arrived at the parking lot and Sparks fled the scene. Two detectives confronted Sparks less than two blocks away, near 55 Forest Ave.
According to Ryan, Sparks refused to obey the detectives commands and as they approached, they saw Sparks what they believed to be a handgun.
Shots were fired and Sparks was fatally wounded. He was pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital Saints Campus.
According to Ryan, a knife and a Colt .117 BB gun, a weapon that strongly resembles a real handgun, were found in Sparks possession.
The two detectives involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
According to Ryan, both victims were employees of the school and the woman is believed to have had a "previous dating relationship" with Sparks.
"This frightening incident appears to be another example of a person violently confronting someone at their workplace about a personal domestic situation," said Ryan.
Investigators learned that the victims arrived for work in one vehicle. As they were parking, they were confronted by Sparks in the parking lot and an argument ensued.
The altercation escalated, the victims were stabbed in the arms and hands and the tires on the victim's vehicle were slashed with a knife. Also during the fight,a car window on the suspect's vehicle was broken. According to investigators, the female victim was dragged by the suspect in his vehicle to another part of the parking lot before he fled the scene when Police arrived.
The victims in the knife attack were treated for their injuries at an area hospital.
