The win duplicated Tewksbury's achievement in the fall. But one had to think the result was almost a foregone conclusion after what the Redmen pulled off earlier this month in Florida.
Matched up against 25 of the top co-ed teams in the country at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Tewksbury High advanced to the finals and placed 9th, shocking many in attendance and even their coach.
"To be honest, given the competition, I really didn't think we'd make it to the finals," said Kim Doherty. "I figured we would perform once, watch the finals and then slip into vacation mode for the rest of the trip."
Such was not the case.
The Redmen, captained by seniors Paige Winn, Corrinne Doyle and Colleen Kelley, put together an exceptional performance in the semifinals and were one of 12 teams picked for the finals. With just an hour to rest and grab a quick bite to eat, Tewksbury re-grouped for the finals and once again wowed the judges at the HP Fieldhouse.
Doherty said the 9th place showing was much higher than the team had expected.
"We're in there with these 'rock star' teams from all over the country and this program has never even been (to nationals) before. This is like the Super Bowl for us," said Doherty. "It was just such an amazing experience. Exhausting but amazing."
It has been an amazing year all the way around for the squad, which has included two league titles, a Fall Sectional championship and a second place finish at the Fall States, not to mention their performance at Nationals. Up next -- the Winter Sectional this weekend at Triton Regional, followed by the Winter States a week later at Wachusett Regional. In between they will be cheering for the boys' basketball team as it vies for its own D2 North Sectional championship.
"We try not to get ahead of ourselves," said Doherty. "The last four years, we have been humbled. "So right now, we're just look at sectionals."
