TEWKSBURY - Mr. James F. “Jim” McGowan, age 89, a resident of the Carnation Drive community in Tewksbury for the past 17 years, died peacefully on Thursday, March 5, at Wingate in Andover. He was the beloved husband for 49 years of the late Rose (Izzo) McGowan, who died in 2008.
Jim was born in Everett, October 10, 1925, one of five children of the late William and Margaret (Walsh) McGowan, and was raised in Everett. He enlisted into the U.S. Army, and later transferred into the U.S. Navy. He served during WWII, aboard the USS Eisner, a destroyer escort ship, in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
After his discharge and marriage, he moved to Malden to raise his family.
He retired from the Samtan Engineering Company, a sheet metal fabrication company, as a foreman, after thirty years of service.
As a resident of Tewksbury he was a communicant of St. William’s Church.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and James “J.J.” Levesque of Melrose, and Kathleen and Leclerc Francois of Tewksbury; a sister, Dot Mortellite of Melrose; five grandchildren, Denise Rivera of Tewksbury, Frank Levesque of Peabody, Leclerc Francois Jr. of Methuen, Jannelle Francois of Sudbury, James Francois of Tewksbury, nine great grandchildren, Steven, Lisa, Evan, Chelsie, Celena, Destiny, Tyler, Aubrie, Madalyn; many nieces and nephews; and was predeceased by his step daughter, Judith Connell, and brothers, William, Donald, and Brendan McGowan.
