Tewksbury High placed 6th in the co-ed Division at the New England Championships.

The Tewksbury High and Shawsheen Tech Cheerleading teams wrapped up history making seasons at the recent 9th Annual New England Interscholastic Spirit Championships at Lawrence High School.
Tewksbury High capped off their year by placing 6th out of 15 teams in the Co-Ed Division with a score of 173.20, just behind 5th place Daniel Hand (174.50). Rutland, Vt. won the competition with a score of 190,10.
"We won two straight (fall and winter seasons) MVC Championships and two straight regionals and placed second twice in a row at states. I'm so proud of this team," said TMHS Coach Kim Doherty. "They sacrifice their time and they sacrifice their bodies to compete in this spot, this 'underdog' sport you could say."
It's been a busy couple of months for the Redmen. In addition to States and New Englands, they also competed in a national competition in Orlando, placing 9th.
"I can't say enough about my seniors. They've accomplished so much and shown such great leadership" said Doherty, whose team qualified for the New Englands by placing 2nd to Fairhaven in the Co-Ed Division at the State Championships earlier in the month.
While the Redmen will graduate some talented seniors, they will return and outstanding core group for next fall and will be looking to improve on their placing at the States and New Englands.
"They have a taste for (success) now. They want more," said Doherty. "We'll work with them individually and talk to them about what they need to work on in the off-season."
Shawsheen Tech, coached by Rosie Pratt, also put together an outstanding performance at the New Englands. The Rams placed 4th in Division 2 with a score of 168.20. Whitman-Hanson won the division with a score of 181.70.
Much like their Tewksbury High counterparts, Shawsheen spent the past several months collecting trophies from various events. The Rams earned1st place and Grand Champions at the Lowell Catholic’s Francis Keegan Invitational, 1st place CAC Division 2 league championships, 1st place Triton Viking invitational, 2nd place Division 2 North Regionals, 3rd place Division 2 state championships.
