Planning Board Virtual Debate: How Do You Feel About TIFs And Other Tax Incentives For Businesses?

Apr 07, 2015 08:09AM ● By Bill Gilman

Planning Board Candidates George Ferdinand and Keith Anderson.

The Tewksbury Municipal Election is Saturday, April 11. The only contested race on the ballot is for one five-year term on the Planning Board between George Ferdinand and Keith Anderson.
Neither candidate has held elected position in Tewksbury previously.
To help inform voters, Your Tewksbury Today asked the candidates a series of questions related to planning and development in Tewksbury. We are publishing their answers in a series of four articles this week.
This is the second in that series of four.

Do you support TIFs and other types of tax incentives to attract businesses to Tewksbury?

In negotiations ,which is one of my strengths, I would never take any tool at my disposal off the table to secure a positive outcome, which in this case would be attracting businesses to locate in or relocate to Tewksbury.

As for TIF (Tax increment financing ), I agree with the concept on the short term. Not just creating districts but allowing all to have a chance at this type of financing with the town.

I am more in favor of negotiated tax incentives, again, short term with the following criteria -- business stability, employment and long term revenue on the town side going forward.
