The French Family has earned a reputation for commitment and generosity to Tewksbury, its schools and its athletics programs. This week, the School District offered its collective thanks.
On Tuesday, the School Committee presented the French's with the "Ginsburg Family Award" for their contributions to Tewksbury and its schools over the decades.
The award was presented by School Committee member Brian Dick, who said the French Family's generosity toward Tewksbury High athletics, and in particular, the football program, dates back to the 70s. (SEE VIDEO OF AWARD PRESENTATION BELOW.)
Phil French, owner of French's Restaurant and a member of the Board of Health and his son, David have both served as president of the Redmen Booster Club.
The Ginsburg Family Award was created in 2013 when the School Committee honored developer and business leader Marc and Leisa Ginsburg for their long history of generosity to the community. The committee announced that the award would bear the Ginsburg family name and be given each year to a person or group of people in the community who exemplifies the Ginsburg's spirit of philanthropy and community pride. The 2014 award was presented to the Tewksbury Rotary Club.
Marc Ginsburg said the French Family has served as a role model for community involvement and philanthropy in Tewksbury.
"They encourage me," he said. "they've been here and been doing this much longer than I have."
Phil French said he and his family appreciated receiving the award and said it was made that much more special because of who presented it and who it was named for.
"You get recognized a few times over the years. But to be recognized by (certain) people means the most. The Ginsburg's have done so much for this town for so many years."

In addition to being on hand to help present the award, Marc and Leisa Ginsburg donated $5,000 to the Tewksbury Public Schools.
