Blast Fitness, which opened April 8, 2014 at 553 Main St., has shut its doors for good. Clients learned of the closing over the holiday weekend. They were greeted by posters on the window announcing the closing, apologizing for inconvenience and encouraging clients to work out at Tewksbury Sports Club, which will be honoring Blast memberships.
The Blast Fitness Tewksbury web page has been taken down and Tewksbury has been removed as a Massachusetts location from the Blast Fitness corporate web site.
Blast opened its Tewksbury location under its Work Out World (WOW) brand, following a highly successful WOW opening in Worcester in 2012. But the name was changed to the Blast Fitness brand after just a few months.
The closing of the Tewksbury Blast comes as something as a surprise. When Gold's Gym, located nearby at 540 Main St., closed in January, a deal was struck between management of the two gyms. Gold's plastered its vacant building with signs directing clients across the street to Blast and Blast honored Gold's memberships.
But even that influx of new business wasn't enough to keep the gym afloat.
The closings of Blast and Gold's leaves Tewksbury with just one major co-ed gym -- Tewksbury Sports Club, at 1830 Main St.
