Austin Preparatory School in Reading is proud to announce that MBTA Transit Police Officer Richard “Dic” Donohue, Jr. will give the commencement address at the school’s graduation next month.

Officer Donohue was severely wounded on April 19, 2013 during the shoot-out in Watertown which led to the capture of the two Boston Marathon bombers. During the gun battle, a bullet severed his femoral artery and he suffered critical blood loss. Emergency workers were able to save his life, and Officer Donohue spent two months recovering in a hospital and rehabilitation center.

A native of Winchester, Officer Donohue has been a patrol officer with the MBTA in Boston since 2010. He is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and has master’s degrees from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the University of Limerick, Ireland. Prior to his career in law enforcement, Officer Donohue worked in the hospitality industry and served as an officer in the United States Navy.

He is a spokesman and board member for the American Red Cross, an organization he credits with helping him survive - he underwent several blood transfusions while receiving emergency care at the site of the shooting.  He works closely with the Red Cross to educate the public on the importance of donating blood.

Officer Donohue lives with his wife and young son and has been honored by numerous organizations and agencies. He is a recipient of the George L. Hanna Medal of Honor, awarded to officers who demonstrate actions above and beyond the call of duty, in the face of certain and imminent danger to life and limb.

Austin Prep will graduate 113 seniors during its 50th commencement exercises on Sat., June 6, at the school.
