You see his trucks all around town.
From Main Street businesses, to side street driveways. In town and out of town, Torode Plumbing is a household name familiar with most residents here in Tewksbury. A business run by Thomas Torode for over 40 years. A business that has solely run on family values, integrity, and honestly.
Thomas Torode has grown his business mostly by word of mouth. His strong work ethic and quality work has been taught and passed on to his son, Michael. Mike Torode has taken that torch and ran with it. Torode Plumbing is so deeply rooted in this town, that I had to find out more. I sat down with Mike and had a real conversation about the company and the town.
Hollie Gonzalez- So the company is located on 1489 Whipple Road. Any disadvantages to having it there, say instead of Main Street?
Mike Torode- Obviously you don't get the visibility as much on Whipple as you would on Main Street. But Torode Plumbing has been there for years, and its kind of like the Cheers song... " Where everybody knows your name.."
HG- You were born and raised here in Tewksbury, why stay here? And why keep the company here instead of moving to a big city?
MT- My father Tom started this company in 1974. He not only grew a business, but a family too. I grew up here. I went to the schools here, and now I take care of my own family here. My family and friends are here. Moving the company to another place is not an option. This town has a lot of advantages.
MT- You get to know a lot of the people. You go to sporting events, the High School football games, the library with the kids, even the supermarket. You see people you went to school with and how they have grown and their families. Its a good town, a strong town with solid roots, just like Torode Plumbing. People know me, and they know the quality of the work I produce.
HG- Speaking of work, what does Torode Plumbing do?
MT- We are fully licensed and insured in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. We are a plumbing, heating and gas fitting business. We can do a wide variety of jobs, ranging from fixing a leaky faucet or clogged toilet to all types of jobs in commercial buildings and multi story renovations. We go in early and stay late until the job is done. We also have a 24 hour emergency service.
HG- In your opinion, what is the best part of Tewksbury?
MT- Definitely the people. They are what makes this town so great. They genuinely care about each other. Most people here know their neighbors, their names, their kids names, their dogs names. Every one waves. You go to other cities and towns, and you don't get as much as a wink, never mind a wave. In a lot of places, people don't even know who is living around them. That's what makes Tewksbury so special.
HG- What type of business would you like to see open up here in town?
MT- A restaurants. A family oriented, sit down place to eat.
HG- What do you want people to know about Torode Plumbing?
MT- Well, obviously the services we provide, but our work ethic. My dad told me when I first started, "Treat every house like it was your house and do the plumbing like it was your own." We have the original value. If your honest and fair you can never go wrong.
So, there you have it. Honesty is the best policy. A motto that Mike Torode lives by. I asked Mike how long he plans on doing this for. If he plans to continue like his dad Tom. He said point blank, that he is never going to retire. He is going to be tooling around in those Torode Plumbing trucks for a very long time.
