GU10-2 Tewksbury 6  vs GU10-2 Melrose 0

The Tewksbury GU10-2 team was back in action at home this past Saturday against Melrose. With no games over the Memorial weekend, the girls were anxious for game play and ready to resume their winning ways. The girls won the coin toss and started the game with the ball in their possession. Avery Della Piana, Carrina Barron and Alana Price took first crack at the Melrose defense and got some early shots on goal. However, Melrose did their homework and were ready for Tewksbury’s heavy offensive pressure. Melrose kept things tight on defense and generated some early offensive momentum. Tewksbury goalkeeper, Megan Cunningham made a couple great saves which quickly cooled the Melrose offense. Just over 8 minutes into the half, defender Brooklynn DeGrechie came up deep in Tewksbury offensive territory to take a throw-in. Utilizing her strength, Brooklynn put in a high sailing throw inside the box. Tewksbury center, Alex Fillmore was in position to receive the ball. She connected perfectly to take the shot and drilled the ball by the Melrose goalkeeper deep into net to put Tewksbury up 1-0.

Tewksbury continued to work the field well and put up several quality shots. The 1st half defensive unit of Ava Paquette, Darya Mehrabani and Brooklynn DeGrechie locked things down on defense and made some offensive rushes. At 17:30 in the half, Darya Mehrabani set up to take a corner kick from the right side. Darya placed the kick to the far side where left wing, Alyssa Adams came crashing in to meet the ball and then took the one-timer left footed shot to score Tewksbury’s 2nd goal of the game. Only minutes later, Alana Price tore up the field with the ball and put through a pass that met with Tewksbury center, Carrina Barron in stride. Carrina dribbled by the defenders and rocketed a shot far out of the Melrose goalkeeper’s reach to score and put Tewksbury up 3-0.

A minute later, Tewksbury had the ball back in their possession deep in the offensive zone. Carrina took a quick shot which rebounded off the Melrose goalkeeper. Avery Della Piana who was trailing the play got enough foot on the ball to put it in the net for the score closing out the half up 4-0.

The Tewksbury girls started the 2nd half with confidence but knew that they had maintain their 1st half level of play. With Avery Della Piana in goal for the 2nd half, Megan Cunningham joined Carrina Barron and Alana Price on the forward line at left wing. The trio had some terrific passing in the offensive zone setting up some nice shots taken by Megan which couldn’t seem to find their way into the net. Leah Casey, Alex Fillmore and Ava Paquette came in on the line change and maintained Tewksbury’s offensive pressure. Leah took a several shots that were deflected by the Melrose defense which in turn left them out of position. Ava Paquette found herself in front of the net with the ball. The Melrose defense drifted back inside but not before Ava took the shot. Ava’s shot deflected off the defender and into the net to score the half’s 1st goal and put Tewksbury up 5-0.

Brooklynn DeGrechie and Darya Mehrabani continued to play flawless on defense and left Melrose with no direct shots on goal. Tewksbury goalkeeper, Avery Della Piana swept up a few Melrose balls and quickly distributed them back up the sidelines for Tewksbury. Midway through the half, Carrina Barron got a breakaway and sent in a blistering shot to score her 2nd goal of the game increasing Tewksbury’s lead to 6-0.

Tewksbury went on a shooting frenzy in the final minutes. Megan Cunningham put up several shots that kept the Melrose goalkeeper and defense extremely busy. However, Melrose had their players covering deep to prevent any further Tewksbury scoring. Tewksbury played hard start to finish and earned the 6-0 win which brought them to 6-0 on the season.
