LETTER: Tewksbury Marine Foretells His Own Death In Touching Letter To Mother

Jun 08, 2015 09:29AM ● Published by Bill Gilman

To the Editor:

Recently, while mining the internet for interesting articles about my home town of Tewksbury, I came across an article that was deeply profound and emotional.  Having just honored those that made the ultimate sacrifice during services on Memorial Day it is also relevant.

On June 30, 1944 a letter written home by Marine Sgt. Paul Houlihan of Tewksbury to his mother foretelling his death and reasons why she should not mourn him, appeared in newspapers across the country.

Having lost an Uncle serving with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II, this letter also resonated with me.

Please share this letter with your readers,

James Celino
