Tewksbury GU12-5 vs. Medford GU12-1

Tewksbury over Medford 3-1

In a battle for first place Tewksbury GU12-5 faced off against the undefeated Medford 1 team which had not allowed a single goal all season. That changed when Gabby Ortiz launched a picturesque corner kick into the goal box and Madison Forgione launched it over the goalie and under the cross bar ending Medford’s impressive goalless streak! The tone for this game was set in the first five minutes when Bella DeMatos’ effort and tenacity were on full display from the center position not allowing Medford players any breathing room. She was rewarded with the pivotal 2nd goal of Tewksbury’s day when she crashed through the middle of the defense and ripped the shot to the back of the net. She also played most of the 2nd half in net and closed out the victory.

Jordan Gardner ended the drama when she buried Tewksbury’s 3rd goal late in the second half. Although not registering a goal, Ashley Bielecki was everywhere on offense and deserved a better fate as it was her work that opened the field for many of our chances.

The real story of this game was the play of Ashlyn Nawn at the midfielder position. Ashlyn was assigned to neutralize perhaps the best offensive player in our league, and not only did she neutralize her, she dominated her. She was not alone, as the combination of defenders Sara Barkallah and Nicollette Evangelista, and sweeper Sophia Madera held the Medford attack at bay all game.

Goalie Riley Veits barely broke a sweat thanks to their efforts and easily handled the balls that made it into her zone. Riley also did a great job starting the attack with her smart choices for punting and throwing the ball out. 2nd half goalie Mia Gaglione epitomized the effort and desire that was needed to win this game when she laid full out to block a shot during a pivotal moment of a one goal game and sustained a kick to the ribs for her effort knocking her from the game. Ashley Demers did it all as usual playing offense, defense, and midfield and her flexibility is the cog that makes our team so flexible. Grace Beckman pretty much single handedly iced this game down the stretch with her ball control along the sidelines and her relentless effort to keep the ball pinned in the Medford corner of the field. This game more than any other epitomized what Tewksbury United stands for as this was a complete team effort!
