Zak and Ryan Bennett, with support from their dad, Bob, are the first official “Islanders” in Tewksbury. Jumping at the chance to beautify a traffic island in town, the Bennett boys quickly submitted their application and got to work. They chose the two islands at Whipple and Pleasant, a location they pass multiple times each day on the way to school, sports and other activities. Removing the artificial flowers, adding some nice plants, mulching the tree, clearing trash and mowing the grass, the boys will take care of this spot for the next three years. A lovely flower pot will be their responsibility to water, and to thank them for their stewardship, a handsome sign announces their efforts. “ We are so thrilled to launch the Adopt an Island program, and we hope the Bennett boys will inspire others to take over other islands in town. Together we can make some positive impacts to the look of Tewksbury” remarks Jackie Stone, Chairwoman of the Tewksbury Beautification Committee, the group that spearheaded the program.
There are several opportunities to take over the maintenance of areas in town. A list of islands and application information is on the Town of Tewksbury website athttp://www.tewksbury-ma.gov/home/news/adopt-an-island-program-guidelines-and-locations.
