Opinions Vary On Proposed Dog Park; Public Hearing Tonight At Senior Center

Jun 25, 2015 01:05PM ● Published by Bill Gilman

A public meeting will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Tewksbury Senior Center to discuss plans to build an off-leash dog park.
Plans for the project will be presented in detail and residents will have the chance to ask questions and voice their opinions.
At the June 9 Board of Selectmen meeting, Town Manager Richard Montuori announced the town had been awarded a $236,000 from the Stanton Foundation help build the canine recreation area in a small section of Rogers Park, located off Rogers Street and Marston Street.
The park itself is 27.5 acres, while the dog park would be .9 acres, according to Town Manager Richard Montuori.
Reaction to to the project within the community has been largely positive. However, there have been dissenters, citing traffic in the residential neighborhood around Rogers Park, as well as the legality over building a permanent structure on the property deeded to the town by the Rogers family.
Here are a sample of the comments on the Your Tewksbury Today Facebook Page:

Sarah Sala Not a huge fan of dog parks, it's great for the dogs to have somewhere to play, but no one knows if the dogs are up to date on shots. Dogs catch so many diseases from dog parks like kennel cough and giradia.

Susan Duffy It will nice not to have to go to another town's dog park! Our favorite is all the way up in Derry NH-but it is a great place-gazebo and seats in the shade, a cement slab with kiddie pools and water faucet so the dogs can cool off and much more!

Shannon Reilly I am for it we are dog owners who live in a townhouse inTewksbury and do not have a yard. So to the people saying "everyone has a yard" this isn't true. We take our children to the playgrounds in and around town because we own a townhouse not a single family home why not the give pups a place to get the stink out. I know Tewksbury has a number of townhouse communities and some apartments so these pups would love a place to be off leash.

Terri Canto-Battaglia So not for this since it's at the end of my street and really why does a town like Tewksbury need a dog park when we all have yards.its ridiculous ! Just another thing to create more traffic in a residential area. For kids to hang and cause trouble and really 24th grant .we can't think of something else to come up with..I moved out of the city and now this town is becoming a city..Really starting to dislike this town more and more

Laurie Higgins-Dozois Dont people have yards for their dogs to run around in? What need is there for a park? It seems a bit unnecessary and wasteful spending- in my opinion. Dog parks are for cities where people have no yards for their animals to run around in- not own where there are yards and woods to go walking in.

Karyn Sliva As a point of information, does anyone even know the 'history' behind that parcel of land? The family of Melvin Rogers who were direct descendants of the original Rogers homesteaders/settlers of Tewksburydeeded the land, close to 30 acres I believe, to the Town of Tewksbury with a letter and list of conditions for the land that was to be honored IN PERPETUITY. It's fairly restrictive and even tree cutting can be taken as not allowed. Nothing permanent can be placed there. The land sits between Rogers and Marston streets. Does the Historical Committee or Commission have possession of these documents? In any case, I would assume that said documents should be available for review and carefully considered within the context of the deal that was part of the donation BEFORE anything is DECIDED. I know that if I was the person donating land to the Town I would EXPECT my wishes to be honored. Before the Town Manager or anyone else clamoring decides this is such a good thing, this family's wishes should be prioritized, if run over slip shod, shame on them!

Kelley Ford Ciampa Thankful the town is listen to residents.

Ange Smith Bout time they did something aside from build condos and town houses. It's pretty bad when your kid sighs out of frustration because more condos are going up. We need other things that will continue to bring income into our town.
