Jul 28, 2015 05:24AM ● By Bill Gilman
The first Dominican Invitational is history but the memories made by the players, coaches and parents involved will last for years to come.
The week-long visit to the Merrimack Valley by a team of 10-12-year olds from the Los Halcones de Francisco Oliva League of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic featured exciting baseball, great displays of sportsmanship and a passion for a game that's the national past-time of both countries.
The Dominican team played two games against a Tewksbury All-Star team, four 4-inning games against Billerica and
one against Haverhill.
The results were as follows:
  • Monday: Dominicans beat Tewksbury Nationals 4 - 0. (this was a scoreless game through four innings)
  • Tuesday: 1st game, Dominicans beat Billerica 8 - 0. 2nd game, Billerica beat the Dominicans 11 - 10.
  • Wednesday: Dominicans beat Haverhill ( don't know the score)
  • Thursday: 1st game, Billerica beat the Dominicans 12 - 10. 2nd game, Dominicans beat Billerica 7 - 1.
  • Friday: Dominicans beat Tewksbury Americans 7 -6 in extra innings (7) The game was tied up 6 -6 by Tewksbury's Owen Fowler who hit a three run BLAST over the right field fence.
The Tewskbury players participating in the games were, as follows:

During their visit, the Dominican players had a chance for some sight seeing. Their visit included taking in a Lowell Spinners game and a Duck Boat Tour in Boston. But the highlight came Saturday when the team toured Fenway Park, went inside the Green Monster, saw batting practice from the field, were acknowledged by Dominican national hero David Ortiz and then stayed for the Red Sox game against Detroit.
Editor Bill Gilman was on hand for the game between Puerto Plata and Tewksbury on Friday and captured the attached images.
