Remembering Pleasure Island on Thursday, August 20

Tewksbury Public Library

All events are FREE thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Tewksbury Public
Library.  (Film screenings are also co-sponsored by the Tewksbury Lions Club.)  All
events are held in the library’s first-floor, air-conditioned Meeting Room.  A book selling
and signing will take place after each author event.  There is no obligation to purchase
a book.

A Year Later: Market Basket Saved with Grant Welker and Daniel Korschun
Thursday, August 13, 7pm-8:30pm
Examine last summer’s Market Basket saga and the unlikely grassroots movement that
saved the business with the authors of “We Are Market Basket.”

Friday Night Film Screening of “Do You Believe?”
Friday, August 14, 8pm-10pm
Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood's newest DVD releases, “Do You Believe?,” a
PG-13 drama starring Sean Astin and Mira Sorvino.  When a pastor is shaken by the
visible faith of a street-corner preacher, he’s reminded that true belief always requires
action. His response ignites a journey that impacts everyone it touches in ways only
God could orchestrate.  Complimentary movie snacks provided.

Tewksbury Job Seekers Network Meeting
Monday, August 17, 2pm-3:30pm
Learn how to ace the job interview with author and leadership expert Stephen Balzac. 
Identify the value you bring to your employer and leverage that value to make you
stand out from the competition.  Learn how you can get into the mind of the
interviewer, how you should deal with difficult questions, and key questions you should
always ask.

Tips On Getting Published from ‘The Nevertheless Writers’
Tuesday, August 18, 7pm-8:30pm
Are you a writer looking to get published? The Nevertheless Writers has the answers
to your questions. The Writers is a cross-genre collaborative of North Shore authors
including Holly Robinson, Edith Maxwell, Elizabeth Atkinson, Nancy Crochiere, and
Susan Paradis. Join them for an interesting panel discussion on how to get published!
There will be plenty of time for Q&A and a reception will follow.

A Book Brunch with “5 to 7”
Wednesday, August 19, 10:30am-noon
Enjoy a screening of “5 to 7,” an R-rated comedy/drama Anton Yelchin, Glenn Close
and Frank Langella.  An aspiring novelist enters into a relationship with a woman,
though there’s just one catch – she’s married and the couple can only meet between
the hours of 5pm and 7pm each evening. Complimentary brunch food provided.

Remembering Pleasure Island with Bob McLaughlin
Thursday, August 20, 7pm-8:30pm
Relive Pleasure Island, an 80-acre theme park in Wakefield that was open from 1959
to 1969, with Bob McLaughlin, President of Friends of Pleasure Island and the author
of four books on the park. This fun event will feature a musical slideshow, home
movies, and more! There will be time for Q&A and story sharing!

Friday, August 21, 7:30pm-9:30pm
Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood's newest DVD releases, “Madame Bovary,” an
R-rated drama starring Mia Wasikowska, Ezra Miller and Paul Giamatti.  The beautiful
wife of a small-town doctor engages in extramarital love affairs in an attempt to
advance her social status.  Complimentary movie snacks provided.

Tewksbury Job Seekers Network Meeting
Monday, August 24, 2pm-3:30pm
Join fellow job seekers to watch and discuss four TED Talk videos. The selected
videos will resonate with those who are unemployed or underemployed. TED is a non-
profit devoted to spreading ideas with short (19 minutes or less), powerful talks.

An Evening with Linda Wertheiner, Author of “Faith Ed”
Tuesday, August 25, 7pm-8:30pm
Take an intimate cross-country look at the new debate over religion in public schools
with Linda Wertheiner, author of “Faith Ed: Teaching About Religion In An Age Of
Intolerance” and former education editor of the Boston Globe.

A Book Brunch with “Citizenfour”
Wednesday, August 26, 10:30am-noon
Enjoy a screening of “Citizenfour,” which won the 2015 Oscar For Best Feature
Documentary.  A documentarian and a reporter travel to Hong Kong for the first of
many meetings with Edward Snowden. Complimentary brunch food provided.

A Forgotten Story of Heroism From The Armenian Genocide with Lou Ureneck
Thursday, August 27, 7pm-8:30pm
Learn how a Methodist Minister from New York and a principled American naval officer
helped rescue more than 250,000 refugees in 1922 during the genocide of Armenian
and Greek Christians. Lou Ureneck is a professor at Boston University and a Nieman
fellow and editor-in-residence at Harvard University

Friday Night Film Screening of “Hot Pursuit”
Friday, August 28, 7:30pm-9:30pm
Enjoy a screening of one of Hollywood's newest DVD releases, “Hot Pursuit,” a PG-13
comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara.  An uptight and by-the-book
cop tries to protect the outgoing widow of a drug boss as they race through Texas
pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen. Complimentary movie snacks
provided.

Monday Night Music: Quintessential Brass In Concert
Monday, August 31, 7pm-8:30pm
Enjoy a free concert with Quintessential Brass, which performs classical, jazz, rock and
pop, as well as music from TV, movies and Broadway. The group’s current repertoire
includes the music of the Beach Boys, Chicago, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Mancini,
Jason Mraz, John Williams, John Phillip Sousa, and others, as well as music from the
movies “Frozen” and “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and popular TV themes. The concert
is co-sponsored by the Tewksbury Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the
Massachusetts Cultural Council.
