Organizers and volunteers who participated in the "Stuff The Bus" campaign were honored by the Tewksbury School Committee at its Sept. 16 meeting.
Stuff The Bus is a nationwide initiative to provide backpacks and school supplies to underprivileged students. Locally, the effort was spearheaded by Nicole Downing, chairperson of the Dewing School PAC, along with Jan Dunn of the North Street School PAC and Ava Taylor of the Heathbrook/Trahan PAC.
"They supplied well over 100 students here in Tewksbury with brand new backpacks and all sorts of supplies in (them)," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. John O'Connor. "That's just tremendous for a community to reach out to families in need.and get them started at the beginning of school."
More precisely, the PAC members, with the help of 22 student volunteers stuffed a Tewksbury school bus with 121 backpacks filled with a variety of back-to-school supplies. The achpacks were distributed to needy students at all seven Tewksbury schools.
Dunn, Taylor and Downing were presented with certificates of recognition, read by school committee member Dennis Francis. The certificates read, in part:
"Whereas the PACs have brought great pride, recognition, enthusiasm and honor to themselves, to their school communities and to the town of Tewksbury  ...  let it be resolved the Tewksbury School Committee applauds, honors and recognizes the outstanding achievement of the elementary school Parent Advisory Councils.
Three of the student volunteers were also singled out for their efforts in the Stuff The Bus campaign. Savanna Jarvis, a 4th grader at Trahan, Charlotte Bartolone, a 3rd grader at Trahan and Cheyenne Bartolone, a 1st grader at Heathbrook were recognized by the committee for running a lemonade stand at the Oakdale Plaza, raising $43 for the Stuff The Bus efforts.
The three girls were presented with certificates of recognition by school committee member Brian Dick. In addition to the certificates, the girls were awarded $15 gift certificates to Mac's Dairy Bar.
