The Tewksbury Historical Society will celebrate Massachusetts Archaeology Month with our 6th Annual Cemetery Tour hosted by Kim Zunino. She is our resident expert on our burial grounds, gravestones and the various cemeteries in town.
What is the difference between a cemetery and a burial ground? That answer and more will be explained on October 18, 2015 starting at the Tewksbury Cemetery on East Street at 3:00pm. (Rain date: Sunday, October 25, 3pm)
The tour will take participants through the Old Center Cemetery and the Tewksbury Cemetery and explore the final resting places of Tewksbury's founding citizens. Learn about gravestone symbols and burial customs of our ancestors. Just in case of rain the tour will be postponed to October 25.
Archaeology is the art of looking back in history and appreciating and learning about structures, people, and events that are marked by what was left behind. For example, native people who lived at the Heath Brook site for 5,000 years left behind many objects that are on display at our town library’s Local History Room. These objects were discovered in a field after it was turned over in the spring and after it rained, revealing the artifacts. The Lacy family simply went out in the field and looked for them. That field is now a parking lot but it is a historic parking lot!
The Tewksbury Hospital (originally Tewksbury Alms House) has left behind several graveyards. So what better place to learn about the past than taking a trip to a graveyard? This Annual Cemetery Tour is open to the public with specially reduced prices. Society members will be allowed to attend for free.Non-members are reduced from $7.00 to $5.00.
Society membership is open to the public. Join and learn about Tewksbury history. Our website has an up-to-date membership form that you can down load to join. Questions about this event can be asked by emailing us at: info@Tewksburyhistoricalsociety.org
