Rams, Redmen Tournament Roundup: Tewksbury High Soccer And Volleyball Teams All Advance

the Tewksbury High boys soccer team won a thriller over North Reading.


Division 2 North Sectional

Tewksbury 3, Hamilton-Wenham 2

Led by MVC Division 2 Player of the Year, Nicole Petherbridge, No. 6 Tewksbury outlasted No. 11 Hamilton-Wenham, 3-2, in the opening round of the Division 2 North Sectional Tournament.

Set scores were 24-26, 25-20, 25-15, 14-25, 15-9.

After dropping the first set, the Redmen found themselves down, 6-1, in the second set, before seven straight service points by Catherine Butler gave Tewksbury an 8-6 lead and put Tewksbury on track.

Game 3 saw Petherbridge showing her dominance, as the Redmen rolled to an easy win and seemed to have the match under control. But the underdog Generals refused to go away and caught Tewskbury napping a a bit in game 4, jumping out to an early lead and coasting to the win.

In Game 5, it was once again Petherbridge asserting her power at the net. Strong play by Molly Robertson and Izzy Simone helped Tewksbury take a 9-3 lead. With Petherbridge serving, Butler took over up front with two straight kills to help put the game and the match away.

Tewksbury advances to take on No. 3 Marblehead (18-1), on the road, Monday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Petherbridge, Ray Honored by MVC

Senior Nicole Petherbridge of Tewksbury High was named the Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2 volleyball Player of the Year, earlier this week. Tewksbury's Nora Butler was named to the MVC All-Confence team

TMHS Coach Jim Ray, was chosen as the D2 Coach of the Year and the Redmen, as a team, shared the league's Sportsmanship Award with Billerica High. Tewksbury's Christina Noyes received an Unsung Hero Award.

Boys Soccer

Division 3 North First Round

Tewksbury 3, North Reading 2

Nick McKeon's overtime goal gave No. 10 Tewksbury High (8-8-3) a thrilling upset win over No. 7 North Reading (7-5-7) in the opening round of the Division 3 North Tournament.

Tewksbury led, 1-0, at halftime on a goal by John Donovan from Maclean. North Reading roared back in the second half with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead. But the Redmen were able to tie the game with six minutes to play on a goal by Eric Gallent from McKeon.

Keeper Rafael Perez earned the win in net for Tewksbury with six saves in goal. Ryan Bain and Marco Martinez also had strong games in the win.

Tewksbury advances to take on No. 2 Marblehead (12-3-3) on the road, Sunday at 4 p.m.

Division 2 North 2nd Round

Arlington 2, Shawsheen Tech 0

No. 4 Shawsheen Tech saw its season end with a 2-0 loss to No. 13 Arlington in the second round of the Division 2 North Sectional. the Rams finish the year at 13-4-3.

Girls Soccer

Division 3 North Sectional 1st Round

Tewksbury 2, Whittier Tech 0

No. 11 Tewksbury (9-7-3) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 3 North Sectional with a 2-0 upset win over No. 6 Whittier Tech (12-4-2) in the opening round.

Karalyn Gallela broke a scoreless tie with a blast from 25 yards out with under 8 minutes to play. Tatum Pecci added an insurance goal in the final minute.

The Redmen advance to take on No. 3 Swampscott (16-2-1) in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 2 p.m.
