Every third weekend for the past several months, Rachel Harris of Tewksbury and members of the USA Tap Team have been meeting at Nancy Chippendale’s Dance Studios. Harris is rehearsing with dancers from across the country in preparation for the IDO World Tap Dance Championships, where they will compete against thousands of dancers from across the globe Dec. 1-5 in Riesa, Germany.
This experience isn’t new for her. In 2013, Harris and her teammates attended the competition, Harris earning two bronze medals for her group numbers and the entire team coming away with five gold, six silver, and two bronzes medals for the United States. “It’s basically the Olympics for tap dance, since dance isn’t in the regular Olympics” Harris said of the international competition.
Harris began dancing at age 4. She danced at Broadway Dance Academy in Tewksbury until 2011 when it closed. She then began dancing at Nancy Chippendale’s Dance Studios in North Andover. Harris is a senior at Tewksbury Memorial High School, a member and co-founder of the Art Club, and a member of National Honor Society. In addition to school and dance, Harris also is a student teacher at the studio. After graduation, she plans to attend college to earn a degree as a Physical Therapist.
The USA team is showcasing their routines on November 27th at 6 PM at Andover High School. Tickets can be purchased at AmericanTapCompany.com for $10. Harris will perform in two pieces. The dancers will leave for Germany the day after the showcase, arriving early to begin practicing. The competition can be live-streamed at IDO-dance.com.
