The Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA Hockey Team improved their season record to 15-2-3 with a well-played 6-0 win over a very talented Triton Viking team on Monday November 9th.
The Vikings are a team that the Jr. Redmen are very familiar with as the 2 teams had a number of classic battles last season including the double overtime thriller in the Massachusetts State Championship game.
With a number of returning players to the Viking squad, the Jr. Redmen knew they would have to be at their best. The Vikings controlled play early in the 1st period, creating back-to-back scoring chances on the first shift of the game but Jr. Redmen goalie Megan Cunningham was there to make the big saves. The Vikings kept attacking but great defensive efforts from Collin Strong, Alex Sovie, Cooper Robillard, and James Kierce kept the game scoreless through the opening 6 minutes of the game.
The Jr. Redmen started to use their team speed and aggressiveness to create some offensive zone pressure. They were rewarded for their efforts when Matthew Cooke fired home a rebound to give the locals a 1-0 lead with 5:45 left in the 1st period, assist on the goal going to Conor Cremin. The Jr. Redmen closed the opening period by scoring 2 goals in a 34-second span to take a 3-0 lead. Brady Chapman found himself alone in the high slot and fired a wrister just under the crossbar for a 2-0 lead, assist to Cooper Robillard. The Jr. Redmen controlled the ensuing faceoff and Conor Cremin sniped a wrister off the crossbar and into the back of the net, assists on the goal going to Brady Chapman and Collin Strong.
The Jr. Redmen went on another scoring spree as they potted 2 goals in a 29-second span to open the 2nd period. Conor Cremin scored his 2nd goal of the game with 10:49 left in the period, assists going to Alex Sovie and Cooper Robillard. Brady Chapman made the score 5-0 with 10:20 left in the middle period on a quick snap shot from the left faceoff circle, assists on the goal going to James Kierce and Conor Cremin. The Vikings didn’t quit and used their team speed to create some offensive zone pressure but great goaltending from Cunningham and solid team defense helped maintain the 5-0 lead after the 2nd period.
The 2nd period started with the Jr. Redmen going on the offensive and nearly increasing their lead but scoring chances by the line of Matthew Doherty, Nick Calouro, and Matthew Cooke were turned away by the talented Triton goaltender. The Jr. Redmen increased their lead to 6-0 with 7:32 left in the final period when Brady Chapman scored his 3rd goal of the game on a pretty breakaway deke move, assist on the goal going to Joey Bourgea. The Jr. Redmen controlled the final minutes of the game and left the rink with a hard-fought 6-0 win.
