Tewksbury Police Headquarters.

A Billerica man was arraigned in Lowell District Court on Wednesday after allegedly hitting an elderly pedestrian on Main Street and then fleeing the scene.
Peter L. Brooks, 60, is charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. According to court records, he was released on personal recognizance. The prosecution had requested $5,000 bail but the defense argued that Brooks was not a flight risk and had no criminal record.
According to Tewksbury Police, the incident took place Tuesday, Dec. 1, just after 7 p.m. near Tedeschi's convenience store, 2280 Main St. Brooks' 2008 Chrysler allegedly struck Bruce A. MacDonald, 71, of 46 Hill St., Tewksbury.
MacDonald was transported by ambulance to the Lahey Medical Center in Burlington for treatment of serious injuries. According to court records, MacDonald sustained head injuries, a fractured vertebrae and a fractured rib cage. He is presently listed in stable condition.
According to Tewksbury Police, Brooks fled the scene of the crash and headed home to Billerica. Witnesses were able to provide police with a license plate number and Billerica Police arrested him at his home.
At his arraignment, Brooks' attorney said his client didn't realize he had hit a person. Rather, he thought he had hit a traffic "horse" or piece of metal in the road.
Brooks is due back in court Jan. 6 for pre-trial conferencing.
