Mexican Restaurant To Open In Main Street Building That Once Housed Friendly's

Dec 08, 2015 08:41PM ● By Bill Gilman
After sitting vacant for more than a year, new life has been breathed into the Main Street building that was once home to Friendly's.
Hector Angel, a third generation restaurateur from San Antonio is preparing to open the Mexica Burrito Grille. He is hoping to be opened for business by the end of December.
Angel describes Mexica as a "Subway-style" restaurant for Mexican food. He says the goal is to provide affordable, delicious food for people who don't have time to eat in a full-serve restaurant.
But he bristles at the term "fast food" because of the negative connotations.
"Fast food doesn't mean it's not fresh," he said. "We prepare everything daily, on site. We cook everything to order."
Angel grew up in the restaurant business. To say that the kitchen was his playground as a child would not be an exaggeration. His grandparents opened the family's first restaurant in San Antonio. The family runs three restaurants in the San Antonio area.
Angel, a trained chef, spent the last five years in Connecticut, where he opened multiple full-serve restaurants. However, he found the state to be difficult to work with in terms of regulations and permitting. His search for a new opportunity brought him to Tewksbury, where he entered into a agreement with O Ice LLC and C/O Realty Income Corp., to lease the property at 759 Main St.
"We're very excited to be part of the neighborhood," he said. "We want to provide people with a relaxed atmosphere where they can get good food for their family. And we want it affordable. We want to keep it simple, easy and good."
Mexica will offer a limited amount of alcoholic beverages, including beers and margaritas.
Drivers along Route 38 will soon see the "Mexica" sign in front of the building. Angel expects to begin hiring staff by next week.
