Search Committee Chooses Four Finalists For School Superintendent

Dec 18, 2015 02:38PM ● By Bill Gilman

Michael Gilbert, representing the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, speaks to the Tewksbury School Committee on Wednesday.

The field has been narrowed to four finalists in the search of a new superintendent of the Tewksbury Public Schools.
The names of the finalists will be announced at a special meeting of the Tewksbury School Committee on Monday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.
According to Michael Gilbert, field director of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, hired to oversee the search process, the ad hoc Superintendent Search Committee received 25 resumes from school administrators interest in succeeding Dr. John O'Connor as Tewksbury's top educator.
Applications were received from candidates in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Colorado and Indiana.
"The committee chose 10 candidates to interview and conducted those interviews over four nights this week. Following those interviews, four finalists were chosen," said Gilbert. "Those finalists are being notified."
According to Gilbert, interviews with the 10 semi-finalists were conducted in executive session by the search committee, using a series of identical questions crafted by the committee, according to values and priorities outlined by the School Committee.
The next step in the process will be site visits to the work places of the finalists, said Gilbert. Those are expected to take place the first week of January.
Each finalist will also be invited to spend a full day in the Tewksbury School District, touring the schools, meeting with and answering questions from the public and finally, being interviewed in open session by the School Committee.
Those visits/interviews have been scheduled for Jan. 12, 13, 14.
"We want to make sure the person hired has the stamina for the job," said Gilbert. "So we are trying to set up a visit that is a typical full day for the superintendent, ending with a School Committee meeting in the evening."
