The Tewksbury Girls Basketball League 8th grade Blue Travel team took to the court over the holiday break to play in the Woburn Travel Holiday Basketball Tournament.
First up on Saturday, December 26 was a much taller Woburn team who shot a very high percentage from outside. Trailing by 11 at the half the Redmen fought back to cut the lead to 4, but Woburn answered with some late baskets to put the game away. The Redmen lost 38-26.
Next up, the Redmen met a Winchester team on Sunday that beat the Woburn team the Redmen played on Saturday by 19. An uphill climb for the once again undersized Redmen. Tenacious and constant pressure on the ball defense by Rena Ruggiero led the way for the Redman. Ruggiero’s defense and the rebounding duo of Morgan Woodman and Olivia Delonais created fast break scoring opportunities for Ashlyn Bisso (8 pts.).
Winchester wouldn’t go away quietly with a late run. The Redmen, up 3 with a minute to play, got two clutch free throws from Ruggiero to seal the win. Redmen 27, Winchester 22.
The final game was against a Wakefield team that the Redmen are all too familiar with, matching up with them for the 5th time in two years. The game between these two is always a tight defensive battle. The Redmen however were not fazed by Wakefield. They ran, pressed, out-rebounded and out-hustled their opponent. Sophie Eskenas, the catalyst to this team, ran the offense with precision with her assists and scoring (5 points) to contribute to the team. Meghan Ostertag was a menace on defense creating loose ball tie ups and turnovers all game.
Ava Nickerson contributed with assist after assist to Bisso (19 pts.) on fast break opportunities. This game was out of reach early for Wakefield as the Redmen scored at will. The balanced scoring attack by Delonais, Woodman, Ruggiero and Ostertag proved way too much for Wakefield to handle capping a 45-23 victory and the tournament championship for the Redmen.
