The Tewksbury Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA Hockey Team improved to 31-7-3 on the season after sweeping weekend games against the Reading Rockets and Stoneham Spartans.

On Sunday January 17th the Jr. Redmen had an early morning battle against the Reading Rockets and skated to a solid 4-1 win.

The Rockets came out soaring and put immediate pressure on the Jr. Redmen but strong defensive efforts from Cooper Robillard and James Kierce along with outstanding goaltending from Megan Cunningham kept the game scoreless early on.  The Jr. Redmen took a 1-0 lead with 6:57 left in the 1st period when Matt Cooke fired a one-timer into the back of the net, assist going to Joey Bourgea.

The Rockets battled back and tied the game 1-1 with 3:13 left in the opening period.  The Jr. Redmen went on the powerplay with just over 1 minute to play in the period and took a 2-1 lead when Brady Chapman redirected a shot from the point, assist to James Kierce.  The Rockets nearly tied the game early in the 2nd period but Megan Cunningham made back-to-back saves to keep the 1-goal lead intact for the Jr. Redmen.

The Jr. Redmen increased their lead to 3-1 with 7:25 left in the 2nd period when Conor Cremin scored a beautiful goal as he broke down the left wing boards, cut in, and roofed the puck short side, assists on the goal going to Brady Chapman and Cooper Robillard.  The Rockets were looking to cut into the Jr. Redmen lead as they went on the powerplay with just over 2 minutes to play in the 2nd period.

Great penalty killing from Alex Sovie, Collin Strong, Nick Calouro and Matthew Doherty kept pucks away from the Jr. Redmen net.  The Jr. Redmen scored early in the 3rd period to take a 4-1 lead when Conor Cremin scored his 2nd goal of the game, assists going to Alex Sovie and Brady Chapman.  The Jr. Redmen controlled play for the final 6 minutes of the game and headed for some rest before their 2nd game of the day.

The Jr. Redmen headed to Veteran’s Arena in Everett for their 1st Disctrict 10 Playdown Game against the Stoneham Spartans.  The Jr. Redmen are looking for back-to-back District 10 Championships and a return trip to the Massachusetts State Championships.  The Spartans came out flying and nearly took an early lead when Tewksbury Youth Baseball All-Star Adam Ellegood’s wrister was snagged by Jr. Redmen goalie Megan Cunningham.  The Jr. Redmen got their legs going and scored two goals in a 3-minute span to take a 2-0 lead.  Matt Cooke got it started when he fired home a rebound for the 1-0 lead, assist on the goal going to Brady Chapman.

Matthew Doherty increased the lead to 2-0 when he intercepted a puck in the neutral zone, skated in alone, and buried a hard wrister over the goalie’s catching glove.  As the 2nd period started, great defensive efforts from Collin Strong, Alex Sovie, Cooper Robillard, and James Kierce turned away any offensive zone pressure by the Spartans.  Matt Cooke scored his 2nd goal of the game with 7:29 left in the middle period to give the locals a 3-0 lead, assists going to Conor Cremin and Matthew Doherty.

The Jr. Redmen went on the powerplay late in the 2nd period and quickly increased their lead to 4-0 when Brady Chapman fired a wrister past the sliding Spartan goalie, assists going to Conor Cremin and Matthew Cooke.  The 3rd period started with the Jr. Redmen on the attack but the talented Spartan goalie was there to make big saves on quality scoring chances from Nick Calouro, Joey Bourgea, and Matthew Doherty.

The Jr. Redmen controlled play for the remainder of the game and skated off the ice with the 4-0 shutout win and a spot in the District 10 Championship Game.
