The Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA Hockey Team won the District 10 Championship for the 2nd consecutive season with a 6-1 win over the Greater Lowell Hawks on Sunday January 31st at the Allied Veteran’s Arena in Everett. The win improves the overall season record for the Jr. Redmen to 33-7-3 and earns the locals a spot in the Massachusetts State Championships in March.
The Jr. Redmen came out flying but early quality scoring chances by Matthew Doherty, Nick Calouro, and Matthew Cooke were turned away by the talented Hawks’ goalie. The tenacious forecheck and quick puck movement paid off for the Jr. Redmen with 6:57 left in the opening period when Joey Bourgea jumped all over a rebound, firing the puck into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead, assists on the goal going to Conor Cremin and Brady Chapman. The Hawks went on the powerplay with just over 3 minutes to play in the opening period but great penalty killing work from James Kierce and Cooper Robillard, along with great goaltending from Megan Cunningham kept the 1-0 lead intact for the locals.
The Jr. Redmen exploded for 3 quick goals in the 2nd period to take a 4-0 lead. Alex Sovie got things started when he fired a bomb from the left point high over the goalies’ catching glove and into the back of the net, assist on the goal going to Matthew Cooke. Conor Cremin scored just 1:27 later on a breakaway as he used his blazing speed to outskate 2 Hawk defenders, firing a nice wrister off the far post and into the twine, assist going to Brady Chapman. Matthew Cooke made the score 4-0 just 1:37 after Cremin’s goal as he dangled around a Hawk defender and fired a perfect wrister into the left corner of the net, assist on the goal going to James Kierce. The Hawks tried to create some offensive zone pressure late in the 2nd period but outstanding defensive work from Collin Strong and Alex Sovie thwarted the Hawks’ chances.
The Jr. Redmen scored just 9 seconds into the 3rd period to take a 5-0 led when Matthew Cooke scored his 2nd goal of the game, assists going to Matthew Doherty and Collin Strong. The offensive outburst continued for the Jr. Redmen just 1:47 later as Nick Calouro scored on a rebound for the 6-0 lead, assists going to Cooper Robillard and Matthew Cooke. The Jr. Redmen controlled play for the final half of the 3rd period and skated off the ice with a 6-1 win and the District 10 Championship.
