According to the old proverb, "a friend in need is a friend, indeed."
Rich Levasseur says his neighbor, Joe Melanson, is such a friend, and is worthy to be the latest Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week.
In his nomination email, Levasseur explained that due to a medical condition, he is limited in the work he can do on and around his home and that Melanson has been there to help him out for more than two decades.
Melanson and his wife, Susan, moved to Tewksbury after they were married in 1985. The couple has three children -- Katie (26), Robbie (23 and Johnny (17).
As their children grew, Melanson became active in coaching youth sports, including baseball, basketball and hockey.
During that time, he and Levasseur became good friends and he wanted to help out around the house and yard, whenever possible. He also gives time helping out Lecasseur's mother-in-law, who also lives in the neighborhood.
For Melanson, the importance of being a good neighbor and helping those in need is something he learned from watching his father. And it's something he is trying to pass along to his children.
"I can remember my dad doing the same thing, helping out the neighbors. I'm following in his footsteps," he said. "It's important to help others and take the focus off yourself."
Here is the complete text of Rich Levasseur's nomination e-mail:

I would like to nominate my neighbor Joe Melanson as person of the week. I've been lucky enough to call him my good friend and neighbor for almost 30 years.
He lives two doors down from my house, I am handicapped and in a wheelchair and he is the first one to come over and help with many things whether it be snow blowing a driveway, raking the roof when the snow piles up, cleaning gutters or just stopping by to say hello. There are also a number of little things he does that go unnoticed. Simple things like putting the trash out if we forget etc.
Joe is also very active in the community having been a former baseball coach for a number of years with Tewksbury youth baseball and a soccer coach
He is also very active at St. Williams church.
His wife, daughter, and 2 sons are equally as kind. This is truly a case where the parents of this wonderful family have brought up their children in a manner that makes this world a better place.
He is always there when needed when anybody asks.
I can go on and on about Joe and why he deserves this honor.
For being named Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week, Joe Melanson receives a gift card from Wamesit Lanes Family Entertainment Center.
