According to town officials, The Tewksbury Senior Center will remain closed at least through the end of the week due to significant water damage caused by ruptured pipes.
According to a town official, one of the pipes was connected to the sprinkler system over the main function hall. When it gave way, the hall was flooded and water seeped under the hardwood floor. The entire floor will need to be replaced.
There was also damage to an area near the restrooms.
Emergency Dispatch was alerted to the problem on Monday at around 11:15 a.m. Because it was President's Day, the center was closed at the time.
Another pipe ruptured Tuesday in a small room storing band equipment, causing moderate damage.
According to an alert sent out by the town, all activities at the Senior Center have been cancelled, while repairs are done and the center is cleaned up.
AARP Tax Appointments will be held at the Tewksbury Pubic Library.
Several other local businesses  and numerous homes sustained ruptured pipes Sunday or Monday due to the entreme cold temperatures over the holiday weekend.
