Led by several exceptional individual performances, the Tewksbury High girls indoor track team posted an outstanding second place finish at the Division 4 State Championships last weekend in Lowell.

The Redmen racked up 70 points, trailing only D4 Champion Milton (91.5). The 70-point total was precisely the result Coach Peter Molloy told his team was within reach for them at a team meeting a few days before the meet.

"We had two or more kids qualify in every single event this year, which for us is unprecedented," said Molloy. "We scored in every even but the long jump and and 1000m. I think this speaks more to how lucky we’ve been as coaches to get to coach the high volume of quality athletes that we’ve been able to coach over the past four years."

Leading the way for Tewksbury was Rachel Sessa, who dominated the long distance races and brought home state titles in the mile (5:07.02) and the 2-mile (11:13.52).

"Rachel Sessa is certainly an impressive story. This is a girl who a year ago didn’t place at this meet and now she’s the champion in both the mile and 2-mile," said Molloy. "Like with most of our kids, she’s a better person and teammate than she is a runner.  It’s always nice to see wonderful kids succeed."

According to Molloy, Sessa is the third girl in school history to win the mile (Heather Farrand outdoor track 1991, 1992 and Jen Takach in 1995, 1997).  She’s the first girl in school history to win a divisional title in the 2-mile.
Devyn Veit placed 6th in the 2-mile, in a time of 11:36.54. It was the second fastest 2-mile time in TMHS indoor track history and qualified her for All-States as a wild card.

Also bringing home a state title was the 4x200 team of seniors Kendall Paolella, Ashley Colarusso, and Christine Jean-Baptiste and sophomore Tatum Pecci, in a time of 1:48.03. The accomplishment was especially sweet for the three seniors who, in 2015, had been part of a 4X200 team that lost out on 1st place by one one-thousandth of a second.
Making their accomplishment even more remarkable is that the team was seeded 5th and, as such, did not race in the fastest heat.

"To win a divisional title is a big deal in our program," said Molloy. "I’m glad those seniors and Tatum were able to etch their names in our record book."

Lauren Polimeno jumped 5-4 to place second in the high jump. It was the third best jump in TMHS school history. She will be co-No. 1 seed in this weekend's All-State Meet.

"We had a great balance of outstanding performance form seniors through freshmen; between events as well: sprints, distance, mid distance, hurdles, jumps, throws," said Molloy. "As I told the girls at our meeting on Thursday, we’re a very good track team."
