Just days after releasing her Candidate Statement, Attorney Cheryl Garrity announced she is ending her bid for a seat on the Tewksbury School Committee.
In a press release issued Sunday night, Garrity cited family obligations as her reason for dropping out of the race.
Garrity explained that her older sister, who lives alone in Western Massachusetts, has been battling lymphoma for just over a year. Following a course of chemotherapy, her lymphoma tumors had “disappeared," said Garrity. However, a recent scan indicated a return of 75 percent of the tumor.
Garrity said her sister has started a course of radiation this past week.
“I do not intend to be a bench warmer on the school committee. However, with my sister’s health, I know I will not be able to give the school committee my full attention and energy," said Garrity. "My sister needs my support for the immediate future. The school committee position will always be available when I have time to dedicate to the school children of Tewksbury.”
