Where you find a successful Scout Troop, you will always find a dedicated, strong leader.
Such is the case with Tewksbury Girls Scout Troop 66771, whose members are blessed to have Joyce Hamlyn as their leader.
For her tireless dedication to Girl Scouts, Hamlyn is this week's Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week!
A Scout during her youth, Hamlyn has been an adult Scout leader for the past 19 years, also serving as Service Unit Coordinator for Girl Scouts in Tewksbury and Wilmington.
While Scouting may not be as popular as it once was, Hamlyn feels strongly it still has a meaningful purpose in helping to develop well-rounded young people.
"Girl Scouts is so diverse," she said. "Girls can try sports, they can try the STEM programs, they car try outdoor activities. We've done three trips with this Troop. And, of course, community service is a big part of it."
Hamlyn and her husband have lived in Tewksbury for more than 30 years. The couple has a daughter and son, both of whom are now adults.
Hamlyn's first experience as an adult leader with Girl Scouts came with her daughter's troop. But after her daughter and the other members of the troop aged out of the program, Hamlyn discovered there was a need for a leader with a whole new generation of young Girl Scouts and made the decision to start the process all over again.
For Hamlyn, it's all about the relationships girls can build and the memories they can create.
"I still remember some of the things I did back when I was a scout," she said. "And I still get together with members of my daughter's troop a couple of times a year."

Hamllyn was nominated for Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week by her friend and fellow Scout leader, Christine Chesbrough. Here is her nomination e-mail:

I would like to nominate Joyce Hamlyn.
Joyce is the service unit coordinator for Girl Scouts in Tewksbury and Wilmington.
Joyce plans almost all the vents for all the girls in Girl Scouts in these 2 towns.  She spends a lot of time planning these events, so all the girls in Girl Scouts can have fun.  Each week she spends many many hours of her time working on Girl Scout stuff.  It's all volunteer work.
Joyce also supports all of the leaders. She will help us out in any way she can. Whether it's advice on a problem we have in our troop, help running an event, troop management, ideas for things we can do with our Girl Scout Troops, or if we need something at the store she will pick it up for us.
Joyce has been volunteering in Girl Scouts for many many years.  All the Tewksbury /Wilmington  Girl Scouts are very lucky to have Joyce as our service unit coordinator.  Many times we hear from other leaders/scouts in other towns how their town does not do much.  Joyce puts on an event at least once a month for the girls. We are very lucky to have her!

For being named Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week, Joyce Hamlyn receives a gift card to Wamesit Lanes Family Entertainment Center.
