You can find you people with a strong business acumen. You can find some with a strong commitment to community service. But to find high school students with a combination of the two is a rare feat indeed.
This week, Jamie Burger and Marina Russo proved they walk in rarified air by placing in the Top 10 (among 180 teams) in the Community Service Project Category at the DECA National Championships in Nashville.
Jamie and Marina were part of a 12-person contingent of Tewksbury High students who competed in the DECA Nationals against some 18,000 students from around the country.
The community service project that had brought Jamie and Marina to this point is one near and dear to the hears to the Tewksbury High School community. The girls were co-chairs of the Annual Meghan McCarthy Fashion Show to benefit the Meghan McCarthy Research Fund.
This year, the event raised $9,410. Of that total, $7,210 went to the research fund, with the remainder going to help the Tewksbury High DECA program. However, competing in the DECA Nationals involves much more than just a successful event."We had to write a 30-page paper on the project and then make a presentation to the judges," said Jamie, daughter of Gail and Joe Burger.
"We had to make a 15-minute presentation. We used a tri-board (display) and a mini-board," said Marina, daughter of Diane and Stephen Russo.
In point of fact, the girls had to make their presentation twice in Nashville. The first time was during the preliminary round and then again, the next day, in the finals. For their Top 10 National placing and for putting on such an amazing Meghan McCarthy Fashion Show, Jamie Burger and Marina Russo are this week's Wamesit Lanes Persons of the Week.
For being named Wamesit Lanes Persons of the Week, Jamie and Marina have received a gift card from
Wamesit Lanes Family Entertainment Center..
