It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
12-year-old Tommy Crawford was one of 10 winners in a contest sponsored by Shaw's Supermarket to have lunch All-World tight end Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots.
But Tommy gave up the opportunity and handed it to his eight-year-old brother Tyler.
It's not just Tommy's generous gesture, but the reason why he did it, that makes him this week's Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week.
Tommy and Tyler Crawford were signed up by their parents, Kelly and Tom Crawford, to attend the Rob Gronkowski ProCamp Football Clinic earlier this month. They were also both entered in the Shaws contest for lunch with Gronk.
Tommy won. Tyler didn't, which made the younger Crawford sibling very upset.
But that wasn't the toughest part of Tyler's week. On June 3, Tyler was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes. He was hospitalized for five days.
While riding into Boston to visit Tyler, Tommy told his father he wanted to do something nice for his little brother because he was going through a lot. He wanted to give him the chance to have lunch with Gronk.
After his parents cleared it with the contest promoters, Tommy gave Tyler the good news.
Showing kindness and consideration is nothing new for Tommy, he is a Special Olympics cheer buddy at the Ryan School and was presented with a good citizenship award.
"He gets all of his good (qualities) from his mother," said Tom Crawford.
But the story doesn't end there.
News of Tommy's generous gesture quickly spread and Dan Hausle of WHDH Ch. 7 came to Tewksbury to interview the entire family at the Crawford home. But Hausle and Tyler Crawford had a secret. During the interview, Tyler told Tommy that both of them were being invited to the lunch with Gronk.
"I knew he was serious because he wouldn't joke about something like that," said Tommy. "Gronk is like my favorite football player."
The lunch took place last weekend at Woburn High School and included a Q and A session.
Tommy asked Gronkowski if he still gets nervous before games.
"He said he gets nervous before every game. He said if he didn't get nervous he wouldn't be (ready) for the game," said Tommy.
Tyler asked if Gronk and his brothers fight a lot (less now then when they were kids) and who his favorite football player was growing up (Tony Gonzalez).
For being named Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week, Tommy has received a gift card from Wamesit Lanes Family Entertainment Center!
