Obituary: Michael F. O’Connell, 24

Michael F. O’Connell, age 24, of Wilmington, died unexpectedly on July 9, 2016, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

Michael was born on October 25, 1991; he was the dear son of Kevin and Cindi O’Connell. Michael was raised and educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Shawsheen Valley Technical High School with the Class of 2010. Michael went on to continue his education at Middlesex Community College in Bedford where he earned and Associates Degree in Criminal Science.

Throughout his life, Michael was an outstanding athlete; he played baseball, football, swimming, but he excelled in soccer. Michael was a standout soccer player with for Wilmington Youth Soccer as well as Shawsheen Tech High School Soccer Team and earned title as MVP for both programs. Michael returned to help coach the soccer team at Shawsheen Tech for several years following graduation.

At the time of his death, Michael was employed as a Mental Health Specialist for McLean Hospital in Belmont; Michael was a hard worker who always showed kindness and compassion for his patients.

In his spare time, Michael volunteered as a youth counselor at the Northwoods YMCA Camp in New Hampshire; he had such a passion for helping children and would do anything to make even one child’s life better.

Michael was a member of a large and loving family; he was one of nine siblings and he always made his family his number one priority. Michael cherished the time he spent with his family at their lake house in New Hampshire and loved to “hang out” at home in Wilmington with his parents and siblings. Michael enjoyed family holidays and special occasions; he looked forward to any reason to get together with his parents and siblings and they always had a great time no matter what they were doing.

Michael was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, and a true friend to many. Michael had a large extended family and tons of friends; his endearing personality and willingness to see the good in people made everyone want to be around him. Michael was a special person who always tried to make a difference in the world; he was greatly loved and will forever be missed.

Michael was the cherished son of Kevin and Cindi (Aubert) O’ Connell of Wilmington, beloved brother of Kim Peters & husband Glenn of Billerica, Kevin O’Connell of Lowell, Kelli O’Connell of Burlington, Eric Anderson of Hudson, NH, Shayna O’Connell of Tewksbury, Nick O’Connell, Chris O’Connell, and Matthew O’Connell all of Wilmington. Loving Uncle of Alycia, Justin, Cheyenne, Madison, Cameron, Colleen, Emily, Julia, Jamie, Gavin, Ava, and great-niece Riley. Mike is also survived by his girlfriend Melissa Hoover of Wilmington, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and extended family.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Thursday, July 14th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in Michael’s memory may be made to DCF Kids Fund, Inc. and send to Jennifer Kitchenham Executive Director of the DCF Kids Fund, Inc., 600 Washington St, Floor 6, Boston, MA 02111.
