Chances are, your social media feed may have been flooded with pictures of smiling, muddy people holding medals, flexing their mud-covered muscles and crawling under barbed wire.
Chances are, your reaction was one of a few: 1) Wow! That looks cool and I wish I was there! 2) No thanks, I’m not down for being covered in mud and 3) Hmm, I wonder if I could do that? It looks like fun and if she/he could do it, I bet I have a chance.
I have great news for all of you: 1) obstacle course racing season is not over 2) the particular one I’m talking about has no mud and 3) YES YOU CAN DO IT AND I WILL SHOW YOU HOW.
I started OCR because I felt the same way (except for the twos … I love mud). I’ve done lots of races over the years including Tough Mudder, the Spartan Race, Warrior Dash and Muckfest. And let me tell you something: these races may be painted as BADASS and ELITE but as a fitness professional who is trained to assess fitness levels, I can promise you there are people OF ALL LEVELS completing these courses. For a lot of them, the appeal of completing a race is what got them to start working out in the first place.
But make no mistake, you MUST train and prepare for them. And you MUST leave enough time to do it. Taking a few jogs two weeks ahead will not do the trick. If your body has been mostly sedentary, or you spend a lot of time on the elliptical and seated machines, you should rethink your workouts and add more functional training.
FORTUNATELY, this fall I am holding an eight-week bootcamp for obstacle course preparedness at Tewksbury Sports Club. It will be tough, it will be fun and those who wish to can participate in the Spartan Race at Fenway Park at the end of the sessions.
I will show you what muscles need to be worked for climbing walls, pulling ropes and crawling under wire. I will prepare you body for running and stair-climbing, for jumping and for balance. At the end of eight weeks, you will have the core and upper body strength you never knew was possible.
ALONG WITH OCR BOOTCAMP is another program designed to help you smash more goals: TURKEY TROT TRAINING. If you’ve always wanted to run a 5K or you just want to improve your time, this is your chance to train amongst friends and be held accountable to your running goals! At the end of training, we will complete a Turkey Trot and celebrate Thanksgiving in style, because nothing says guilt-free apple pie like a Turkey Trot.
THE BEST NEWS: Participants for TTT and OCR Bootcamp will receive plans for weekly training outside of the class, so you are never aimlessly wandering around the gym, wondering what to do.
For those of you that are looking to set a new goal for fall, this is the time! It all begins Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. for OCR bootcamp and 9 a.m. for Turkey Trot Training at Tewksbury Sports Club.Sign up by the end of August and you’ll get a discounted rate!
