In American history, Dec. 7 may be a "date which will live in infamy." But for the children and staff of Lawrence General Hospital, Dec. 7 is a date that will be known for love and generosity.
Dec. 7 is the birthday of Sarah Downing, a 6th grader at the Ryan School. And last month, for her 12th birthday, Sarah announced that she didn't want a big party or presents. Rather, she wanted to collect gifts that could be given to children who really needed them.
After doing some research, Sarah decided the gifts she collected should go to the Pediatric Center at Lawrence General Hospital.
This act of generosity and selflessness is why Sarah Downing is our Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week!
"I've got a lot of (stuff) and I just thought it would be a good idea," said Sarah, the oldest daughter of Michael and Nicole Downing. "There are a lot of kids that are stuck i the hospital and I wanted to be able to do something for them."
The response to her plan was overwhelming and the Downing was able to deliver dozens of gifts to the pediatric center.
Sarah was nominated to be Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week by her mother. Here is Nicole Downing's nomination email:
I would like to nominate my daughter, Sarah Downing, as the person of the week. Sarah's birthday is in early December and this year when her dad and I asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she responded with 'Nothing for me, but I have an idea.' She told us that instead of a birthday party and presents, she just wanted to collect presents to be donated to other kids who might need them. After a few conversations, she decided that the Pediatric Center at Lawrence General Hospital would be the recipient of her gifts. Because we know a Tewksbury mom who works in the pediatric department at LGH, it was the perfect fit.Not many 12 year olds are mature enough to think of others over themselves, especially in this day and age. I'm so proud of her as her mother that I think she should be recognized for her selfless act.Thank you,Nicole Downing
For being named Wamesit Lanes Person of the Week, Sarah received a gift card to Wamesit Lanes Family Entertainment Center in Tewksbury.
