Developer Arnie Martel has been involved in numerous projects in Tewksbury and throughout the region. Each has its own significance.
But Martel's latest project may prove to be his signature work, a legacy to his commitment to his hometown and his love for his family.
Earlier this month, a ribbon-cutting ceremony sponsored by the Tewksbury-Wilmington Chamber of Commerce officially opened the doors to The Residence at Joan's Farm, a 96-unit luxury apartment development located off Livingston Street, just beyond the East Street Farm.
"I like to give back in town. I've lived here all my life, I live just a few miles from here," said Martel, whose projects have included Bella Woods, Katie's Estates and Eagle's Landing, among others. "Somebody's going to develop in town. Thank God it's me. I want to give high-end (projects) to the community."
Woven into the project are tributes to people with a permanent place in Martel's heart. The complex itself is named for Martel's mother Joan. The road into the development is Donny Martel Way, named for Martel's late brother.
But the tributes extend to his wife's family, who Martel credits for their inspiration and support. One of the buildings is named for his father-in-law, Pete Peters, and another for his late mother-in-law Kaye Peters.
"(Pete Peters is ) a fine gentleman, been wonderful to me, putting up with all my crap. I owe him a lot," said an emotional Martel, during the ceremony. Of his mother-in-law, he said, "she's a wonderful lady, we all miss her. I guess she's the one that kept us all together over the years."
The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by local and state officials, including Mark Kratman, chairman of the Board of Selectman and state Rep. Jim Miceli. Also in attendance were local business leaders and a number of family members and friends of Martel.
About a dozen units at Joan's Farm are occupied thus far. Additional buildings will be ready for occupancy shortly and Martel said the project should be completed this fall.
Units range in size from 835 - 1,108 square feet, with rents between $1,850-$2,250 a month.
Amenities on the property include a fitness center, a clubhouse, private walking trail, garage, dog park and a bbq/picnic area.
